Dan Sekanwagi

j0115834.gif (185 bytes) Main Gallery

Sekanwagi became a full-time artist in 1976 prior to fleeing to neighboring Kenya as Uganda's economic and cultural life collapsed under chaotic political rule. Living in Nairobi until 1983, his unique works left a deep and lasting influence upon the city's internationally recognized art scene. Sekanwagi's innovative and original technique of painting with inks and dyes gained fast adoption among other leading East African artists.  His use of fluid and sweeping semi-abstract, cubist-influenced forms helped define this distinct modernist style now characteristic of East Africa's Modern Art Movement. Sekanwagi attributes the visual appeal of his art to the free and adventurous approach he applies to his creative process.

Sekanwagi has exhibited widely in Africa, Europe and North America.  The artist has been featured on television and radio broadcasts, including the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC World Service), Kenya Television and Voice of America (VOA).  His works are also in the permanent collections of the Uganda National Theater and the Palace of His Majesty King Ronald Mutebi III of Buganda Kingdom, Uganda, among others.
