Santiago Bose

“The Holy Mountain” can be seen as Catholicism meets traditional animist rituals of the past.  Similar to the way South Americans integrate Catholicism into their ancient religious customs; Filipinos also integrate their indigenous customs, deities and cultural relics.  As illustrated here, Bose uses multimedia techniques to juxtapose Catholic icons with the holy mountain (all nestled in the tropical beauty of the Philippines.)

Bose is recognized as a leading artist in the quest for rediscovering a new Filipino identity (after the fall of the Marcos regime in 1986.)  Rejecting purely western influences he seeks to reestablish a connection with the ancient past by using folk and pre-colonial icons, interspersed with modern found objects and religious iconography for his unique blend of imagery.

Bose has exhibited at major international events such as the Third Asian Art Show in Fukuoka, Japan and at the Asian art Museum of San Francisco.  He has also been a recipient of several major grants and has exhibited and traveled extensively throughout the world.
