addition to deft compositional balance and resonant coloring, the artist injects a bit of
humor into the portrait. One may wonder what
the tiny grandmother is doing sitting inside the basket.
Or about the detached but delicate hands and feet at the bottom (like the unique

Using
traditional ink and watercolor washes on hand made rice paper, Thanh creates beautifully
rendered portraits. While simple in their
straightforward presentation, Thanh infuses cultural motifs such as plants, baskets,
fruits and the Lotus position of hands and feet. His
gentle compositions give viewers the simultaneous sense of both the simplicity and the
complexity of human identity.
Thanh has exhibited widely, particularly in Europe, Japan and Hong
Kong. Most recently he was chosen as one of
three artists to represent Vietnam in the prestigious Asia Pacific Triennial in Brisbane,
